. so, can we talk about the weather?

Someone asked me THE EVIL QUESTION tonight. After a wonderful evening of planting 100 bulbs at the wormhole ( so they will bloom in spring during exams). She is an atheist, and I'm a Christian. We were talking, and all seemed to be nice. Then she asked me if I thought she was going to hell.
Please, my friends, don't ask a Christian that question...it's just not fair. It was so obvious that she wanted me to say the wrong thing, too. What is the right thing to say? I told her the bible says we're all essentially screwed without God, and that we're all on the same playing field.
Then she asked me whether I thought I was going to heaven.
Yes, I do.
Why?
Because about five years ago I took advantage of a universal get out of jail free card by the name of Jesus?
Then you believe I'm going to hell.
That's not up to me at all.
Well, whether its true or not, the fact that you believe it is really mean and offensive. Um...I'm going home now.
So, I've managed to offend you?
It Can't be helped. Bye.

Crap. I tried. Does anyone understand? I loathe offending people. I'm not elitist, I don't think that God likes me any better than he likes everyone else. God likes you. Really.
Grumble.
I want to have tea and not think about conversational atom bombs.

I understand what you mean. I hate when they set you up, and basically force you to say either what you believe or lie....and they usually know you're lying, but choose to believe it anyway. 'Cause it makes them feel better about themselves. And really, if you don't tell the truth, how good of a friend are you, let alone, example of Jesus? You just have to answer in love. And if they're offended, well, remind yourself that Jesus offended people too...but He didn't lie. So I believe you did the right thing. And yes. Have some tea. (heart)
